Finishing Strong and Preparing for What’s Next
As Term 3 draws to a close, it’s a timely reminder for all students—particularly our Year 12s—that finishing strong is just as important as how you start. Completing assessment to the very best of your ability not only reflects the hard work you’ve put in this year but also sets you up for success moving forward.
For our Year 12 students, the final weeks before external exams are an opportunity to refine study habits and consolidate knowledge. Effective study means more than simply re-reading notes—it involves active revision strategies such as summarising key concepts, practising past papers, and testing yourself under timed conditions. Building a consistent study routine now will reduce stress later and ensure you enter Term 4 with confidence.
Remember, each piece of assessment is a chance to demonstrate your growth, persistence, and capability. By maintaining focus and effort right to the end, you not only achieve your personal best but also finish your school journey with pride. Let’s encourage one another to push through, stay motivated, and finish Term 3 strong.

Primary STEM Challenge Day
On Tuesday 26th August, we held our annual Primary STEM Challenge Day, with teams from Townsville West, Townsville South, Railway Estate, Townsville Central, Oonoonba, Garbutt and Magnetic Island State Schools.
Students designed a team poster then constructed paper F1 cars to match, before racing them down our track.
- Best poster was won by ‘Milkyway Vibes’ from Garbutt SS Team 1 with exceptional detail and creativity.
- Fastest time for the day was 1.096 seconds by ‘84’ from Townsville South Team 1.
- Overall winner for the Primary STEM Challenge Day was ‘South Soldiers’ from Townsville South Team 2 with a best time of 1.120 seconds, excellent marketing of their poster and car and great teamwork throughout the day.
Congratulations to all students who competed on the day, we had some great team posters and very fast cars!

2025 Townsville STEM Faire
On Friday 29th August, we had Dr Graham Walker from ANU perform a Science Show in the hall. He rode a hoverboard, fired a marshmallow cannon and showed the effect of pressure change using liquid nitrogen, including an epic teddy bear explosion! Thank you to Dr Walker at ANU, Heather Robson of JCU and the Townsville STEM Hub for organising this experience for our students.

On Saturday 30th August, our STEM Academy ran an F1 Racing Challenge at Riverway Precinct as part of the 2025 Townsville STEM Faire, in conjunction with the Townsville STEM Hub and Townsville Citylibraries. 235 different cars were made and raced as over 5000 people attended the event. Participants decorated and folded an F1 skin, attached it to our 3D printed car bodies then raced it down our track at 80km/h!

Quantum Physics Presentation
On Friday 12th September, we had Dr Josephine Dias, ARC DECRA Research Fellow from the University of Queensland, present the 2025 John Mainstone Youth Lecture Tour, sponsored by The Queensland branch of the Australian Institute of Physics.
Dr Dias discussed the development of our understanding of light over the past 100 years, leading to Quantum Theory and real-world applications including quantum entanglement. Students explored polarisation and how light behaves as both a particle and a wave.
Thank you to Dr Dias, the University of Queensland and the Queensland branch of the Australian Institute for Physics for this unique and engaging experience for our students.

Wetland Warriors
Students ventured into the mangroves, taking action as citizen scientists!
Earthwatch Australia hosted Wetland Warriors Youth Ambassadors recently at Oonoonba Community Centre where several Townsville State High School students got hands-on as citizen scientists, conducting saltmarsh surveys and learning how to protect these vital ecosystems.
This is more than just a field trip – it’s a chance to connect science, sustainability, and youth voice, fostering agency and leadership in real on-ground programs.

Victory in the Pacific
On Friday, 15 August 2025, Townsville commemorated VP80, marking 80 years since Victory in the Pacific. Junior School Captains (Jax Baynes, Claudia Harris, Addison Forward, and Jove Zanotto), alongside Mr Quirk and Year 12 student Jemma Black, proudly represented our school at the solemn wreath-laying ceremony. The event honoured the sacrifices of Australian servicemen and women, with tributes offered in reflection and respect. A moving highlight was the recreation of the historic “War is Over” speech on Flinders Street, echoing the relief and joy felt in 1945. The ceremony connected students with history, reminding them of the importance of remembrance, peace, and gratitude for those who secured Australia’s freedom.

Year 11 Business Studies Market Day Raises $1,562 for Ronald McDonald House!
Year 11 Business Studies students at Townsville State High School showcased their innovation, teamwork, and entrepreneurial spirit during their recent Market Day event. As part of their business studies program, students planned, managed, and operated small enterprises, offering a variety of popular treats including hot chips and gravy, lollies, donuts, cookies, and cold soft drinks.
Students developed business names, logos, and slogans, and effectively marketed their stalls to their target audience — their peers. Their efforts extended beyond sales, as they sought community support from local businesses. Generous sponsorships were provided by BidFoods Australia, Tropical Packaging, Krispy Kreme Northshore, Fairfield’s Woolworths, and Campbells Wholesales, who donated food items and supplies to support the event.
The day was a resounding success, with students raising an impressive $1,562, all of which will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Townsville to support families in need.
This initiative not only gave students practical experience in business planning and management but also highlighted their commitment to community service and social responsibility.

Year 11 Business Studies Shine at JCU Heroes in Business Program
Four of our Year 11 Business students recently had the opportunity to attend the James Cook University (JCU) Heroes in Business program. The event brought together young, aspiring entrepreneurs to engage with local business leaders, explore innovative ideas, and gain real-world insights into what it takes to succeed in today’s competitive business environment.
Through a series of workshops, presentations, and networking activities, our students developed their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while learning about the challenges and opportunities faced by modern businesses.

Early Childhood Studies
Our Early Childhood Studies class has been busy in the kitchen, creating healthy children’s party food with a focus on wellbeing and nutrition. Students considered how to make fun and appealing party snacks that are also nutritious and suitable for young children. This hands-on activity not only strengthened their cooking skills but also highlighted the importance of promoting healthy lifestyle choices from a young age.

Jack Beasley Foundation
Earlier this term, our Year 7, 8 and 9 students took part in the powerful One Moment Education Presentation, delivered by Belinda and Brett Beasley. On 13 December 2019, their 17-year-old son Jack tragically lost his life in a stabbing incident at Surfers Paradise. Since then, the Beasley family has dedicated their time to educating young people about the dangers of carrying knives and the devastating ripple effects of violence. Through sharing their personal story, alongside contributions from Jack’s brother Mitch, Jack’s friends, and local Police Officers, students heard first-hand how lives can change in just “one moment.” This important presentation encouraged our students to reflect on the consequences of choices, the importance of making safe decisions, and the reality of knife-related laws.

Magnetic Island Excursion
What a fantastic day our students had on their recent trip to Magnetic Island! For many, the adventure began with their very first boat ride on the ferry, but the highlight of the day was our visit to the Koala Hospital. Students learnt all about their feeding and habit as well as the hospital rescues and the conservation efforts at the hospital. We want to give a huge shout out to our wonderful guide, Dr. Ali Bee for her time and the expertise she shared
We ended the day at Alma Bay where students enjoyed some free time to play, dance, and explore the beautiful surroundings. It was a wonderful day of new experiences, learning, and fun!

Townsville Multicultural Support Group (TMSG) Award
We're excited to share some great news! Our principal, Murray, accepted a special appreciation award from the Townsville Multicultural Support Group (TMSG) for our school's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The award recognizes the outstanding contributions of local organizations that champion diversity. It's a testament to the hard work of our entire school community in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.
The award was presented at a ceremony on Friday, August 29th, at Aitkenvale State School Hall. This is a great honour, and we feel incredibly proud.

Senior Education and Training (SET) Planning
Our students have been hard at work on their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plans to prepare for subject selection for 2026. This process, guided by our Heads of Department, helps students map out their individual learning pathways for Years 11 and 12.
The plan is a crucial step for our students as it helps them select subjects that align with their career goals, whether they are aiming for an ATAR, a vocational pathway, or a combination of both. Please have conversations with your students and ensure that all forms requiring a signature from the student, a parent or guardian, and the Head of Department has been submitted.
We look forward to further supporting our students in this exciting next phase of their education.
School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SAT) Student and Parent sessions
Thank you to all the parents who attended our recent information session on apprenticeships and traineeships! We were delighted to see so many families eager to learn about the different pathways available to students after high school.
The session, co-hosted with the Department of Trade, Employment and Training, provided valuable information about school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SAT). Students can earn their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) while getting paid for real-world work experience.
Well done to our amazing students who interpreted for us!

Football Queensland
Our students are loving the new football program, Every Tuesday at first break, our students have been honing their skills and having loads of fun on the field.
The program is a fantastic opportunity for students to be active and learn more about the sport. Last week the participants selected some training items, and we are very grateful to Football Australia for funding this wonderful initiative.
It's been great to see the enthusiasm and teamwork on display each week. The program runs until September 2nd, and we can't wait to see our students continue to grow and develop their skills.

School Facilities Upgrades
Finally, the much-anticipated and much-needed upgrades to the back sports courts have now been completed! A fully Townsville State High School funded project, we are proud to inform that the external courts now provide a safe, high-quality sporting area for our students. Including line markings for basketball, netball, futsal, pickleball and volleyball, sports resurfacing and new perimeter fencing to meet current Department of Education standards, the courts have already proven to be extremely popular. Thank you Advantage Sports & Leisure for upgrading our courts and working very closely with our school, using an innovative approach to transform the previous courts into a modern, safe, performance focussed facility that will benefit our students immensely for years to come.

School Dental Van
Townsville State High School have had the privilege of Queensland Health School Dental Van visiting during Term 3 and will continue their visit through the end of Term 4 at this stage. TSHS is the only state high school in Townsville to have secured a visit by the dental van and over 50 students have accessed the service so far with many more on the waiting list. Thes students receive a FREE examination, Xrays, teeth clean and fluoride treatment by the two friendly and professional oral therapists Anastasia & Trinette.
A friendly reminder for parents; if you have received a text message or letter from the dental van advising that your child needs treatment, please contact dentists on 0427908711 to book in an appointment.

Colour Run
A huge thanks on behalf of Student Council for everyone’s help with yesterday’s Colour Run. It was an absolute delight for me to see how much fun all of our students had getting covered in colour and water, running around the oval again and again. With a few exceptions, behaviour was brilliant and the event went off without a hitch.
Creating special memories for and moments with our students like this are what it’s all about, but there is no way it works without every staff member that was out there bringing the massive energy and positivity that was on display. It was clear you all were having as much fun (and catharsis) as the kids. I feel lucky to get to organize events like this and work with such great people.
Special thanks to inexhaustible Jordana, Davalee, Izaac, Ben, and Emily for always being there to help out a fellow Year Co; to Renae, Helena, Loren in the office and others who provide boundless support in organizing supplies and resources for us; and to Shane, Senghor and Karen our facilities and grounds officers for all their help setting up and taking down equipment.
